DRA Board Proudly Supports the Adoption Dix Park Master Plan


Raleigh City Council is scheduled to vote on the proposed Dix Park Master Plan on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. 

The Board of Directors of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance passed a resolution proudly supporting adoption of the Dix Park Master Plan. Dix Park will advance Downtown Raleigh’s identity as a central urban core surrounded by parks and greenspace, provide a signature gathering place for the city, and present a new place for additional events and activations. The plan itself respects the important legacy of the land and buildings, emphasizes the need for direct connections to downtown, and included a robust public process for input. The Downtown Raleigh Alliance supports the continued progress of Dix Park and recognizes its value to downtown, the city and region.

RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE DOROTHEA DIX PARK MASTER PLAN


WHEREAS, the City of Raleigh, in partnership with Dorothea Dix Park Conservancy, have provided an avenue for thousands of area residents to participate in the development of a master plan for the future Dorothea Dix Park; and

WHEREAS, inspiration for the Master Plan has drawn from dozens of examples of signature urban greenspaces that are proven to have positive, catalytic impacts to their adjacent downtowns; and

WHEREAS, the vision established in the Master Plan advances Downtown Raleigh’s identity and one of its competitive advantages as a central urban core enveloped by parks and greenspaces; and

WHEREAS, the Master Plan respects its important legacy as a revered place, includes plans for preserving its historic structures, and honors its namesake champion of mental health; and

WHEREAS, the Master Plan includes opportunities to physically integrate broad community interests ranging from non-profit organizations, civic uses, customer-serving business, and an abundance of passive and active recreational areas; and

WHEREAS, the Master Plan’s proposed recreational areas will present newfound, appropriately scaled places to host large events and activations that will better serve the community and benefit Downtown Raleigh; and

WHEREAS, the Master Plan places an emphasis on establishing direct connectivity between Dorothea Dix Park and Downtown Raleigh, thereby articulating an intent to connect all whom enjoy Downtown to Dorothea Dix Park’s places and programs; and

WHEREAS, the Master Plan is consistent with Goal 4 of the Downtown Raleigh Alliance’s Strategic Plan which encourages the design, support, and programming of exceptional parks and open spaces.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Downtown Raleigh Alliance encourages the Raleigh City Council to adopt the Dorothea Dix Master Plan and direct staff to develop an implementation plan for Phase A.
